College Experience

My College experience has to be the most unique experiences thus far. What I mean by that is it has really shaped me to become an adult. It has and currently teaches me that endurance is key. I currently am working in the retail field and the experiences there has given me the push that I need to stay in college. In this industry today you need more than just a Bachelors degree but a Masters degree to make a decent living. I have had poor professors and commendable professors. Some have encouraged me and given me good advice that the college itself would not display openly. This is a good advantage on my part which will make me have a better and memorable college experience. Currently I am in a club called the NSLS which stands for The National Society of Leadership and Success, which helps us to become a better leader and overall person. This helps with networking with other people and offers us many scholarships. As I continue on this college life will make me a better person and learn how to discipline myself in all situations in life. http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-in-between/201409/should-everyone-go-college

Coming of Age

My coming of age moment is when I stepped into the halls of my High school and met one of my greatest mentors. Ms. Ericka Coley was her name and she was my Reading teacher who helped me and encouraged me to do well in high school and even in life in general. She became like a second mother that guided me through the rough periods in school. High school has taught me lessons on becoming a more responsible person. While I was in school, and with the assistance of Ms. Ericka, I joined an extracurricular activity, which was the step team. I had a great time building sisterhood and brotherhood relationships with my schoolmates. The step shows that we put on were one of the best our school has ever seen. The steps and routines took lots of hard works and arguments but at the end of the day we all came together as family and made up at the end of the practices.

Cultural Background

From the island of Jamaica to the U.S is where my parents migrated from in the year 1986. This island is a well known island, especially for their beaches and tourist spot in the parish of Kingston and Montego Bay. Born on an island with little opportunity, my parents decided to migrate to the United States to better their lives as well as their potential family. Along came my sister Janeen, born in 1986 and three years later my brother Al and last but not least me. My parents had the privilege to come to this country a lot smoother than most. While they had the option to remain in Jamaica they were offered by a great man to reside in the U.S permanently. This decision forever changed their lives which allowed their children's life to become a lot better off than theirs. Having parents coming from an impoverished country allows me to be grateful and appreciate as well as take advantage of the many opportunities this country has to offer.
